Il 6 di dicembre del 2011 Rosalie Bertell spedì una lettera a Ahmed Djoghlaf, segretario esecutivo della Conferenza delle Nazioni Unite sulla Biodiversità a Durban, lettera in cui allertava sulle conseguenze della geoingegneria climatica. Il suo appello non ha ricevuto una risposta. Morì pochi mesi dopo.

Ero grata per l’approccio diretto del Sommario esecutivo, come era stato preparato dagli editori e separato dagli autori del documento stesso. In alcuni punti il documento appariva più un pretesto per la geoingegneria, piuttosto che una valutazione seria e imparziale della proposta.
A quanto pare ci si aspetta che il pubblico abbia fiducia nel fatto che gli scienziati sappiano gestire tutti i problemi relativi ad interventi molto complessi e dagli imprevedibili sviluppi sul sistema Terra, senza badare ai pericoli, solo perché gli scienziati pensano che la società vorrebbe continuare ad inquinare. Alla conversione della nostra dipendenza da combustibili fossili nello sviluppo di tecnologie energetiche più benigne, si collegano meno incognite e / o conseguenze pericolose, di quante ne comporti la manipolazione di un sistema terrestre in delicato equilibro, con un potenziale di conseguenze pericolose estese e irreversibili dovute all’interruzione dell’interazione naturale tra gli oceani e il Sole, la ionosfera e la magnetosfera!
Abbiamo già una vasta esperienza, a cominciare dai tentativi di controllo del tempo meteorologico mediante cloud seeding (inseminazione delle nuvole) negli anni 1950, e 5 decenni di esperimenti militari progettati per garantire un “full spectrum dominance” (“predominio a spettro completo”) entro il 2020.
Il tentativo fallito delle forze armate USA di costruire uno “scudo di telecomunicazione” nella ionosfera nel 1961, per contrastare l’interferenza del vento solare con le radio-comunicazioni, dovrebbe servire come avvertimento. Hanno portato nella ionosfera 350 trilioni di aghi di rame lunghi 2-4 cm, tentando di costruire una fascia di 10 km (6 miglia) di spessore e 40 km (25 miglia) di larghezza per formare una cintura. In realtà hanno lanciato in orbita i 350 trilioni di aghi – e secondo la moglie del fisico Walter Richmond: “Abbiamo avuto il terremoto di forza 8,5 in Alaska e il Cile ha perso una buona parte della sua costa. Nel 1962, a luglio gli Stati Uniti hanno revocato il divieto di test nucleari nell’atmosfera e hanno iniziato a testare le bombe nucleari nella ionosfera. Questi esperimenti includevano “un dispositivo da un kilotone ad un’altezza di 50 km e uno da un megatone e uno da molti megatoni a diverse centinaia di chilometri di altezza”. Questi test hanno gravemente disturbato la fascia inferiore di Van Allen, praticamente distruggendola, con particelle radioattive trasportate nell’atmosfera inferiore, e annullando ogni possibilità di comunicazioni radio terrestri per diverse ore su un’area di molte miglia.
“Il 19 luglio. la NASA ha annunciato che come conseguenza del test nucleare ad alta quota del 9 luglio, era stata formata una nuova fascia di radiazione, che si estendeva da un’altezza di circa 400 km a 1.600 km (250 – 1.000 miglia); può essere vista come un’estensione temporanea della fascia inferiore di Van Allen. ” [K.H.A., 5 agosto 1962.]
Più tardi, nel 1962, l’Unione Sovietica intraprese esperimenti simili, creando tre nuove fasce di radiazioni tra 7.000 e 13.000 km (4.300 e 8.100 miglia) sopra la Terra.
Da quel momento i flussi di elettroni nelle fasce di Van Allen sono cambiati in modo marcato e non sono più tornati al loro stato precedente. Gli scienziati specialisti del settore stimano che ci vorranno all’incirca un centinaio d’anni prima che tornino “normali” (se mai lo faranno).
Negli anni ‘70 abbiamo appreso che lo strato di ozono si era impoverito di circa il 4% a causa delle esplosioni nucleari da 300 megatoni eseguite tra il 1945 e il 1963. In nessuno di questi casi erano previsti i risultati di questi colossali esperimenti – né siamo stati in grado di ripristinare la normalità del nostro pianeta dopo quanto compiuto!

Nel 1983, il lancio del razzo Saturno 5 ha funzionato male, e il secondo booster è bruciato nell’atmosfera a un’altezza insolita, a 300 km (186 miglia). Questo turbamento della ionosfera ha ridotto il contenuto totale di elettroni di oltre il 60% su un’area del raggio di 1–000 km per la durata di diverse ore, arrestando tutte le comunicazioni radio. Dopo questa esperienza, i militari hanno cominciato a sperimentare deliberatamente, creando buchi come ustioni nella ionosfera, usando il razzo booster e, successivamente, il sistema delle manovre orbitali. Questi esperimenti hanno causato “bagliori” artificiali nel cielo quando le particelle radioattive hanno colpito i gas nella bassa atmosfera terrestrea. Durante gli anni 1980 venivano eseguiti da 500 a 600 lanci di razzi all’anno, con un culmine di 1.500 nel 1989. Ogni volo ha iniettato circa 187 tonnellate di cloro che distrugge l’ozono, e 7 tonnellate di azoto nello strato di ozono, entrambe sostanze che notoriamente lo impoveriscono. Eppure la colpa di questa distruzione è stata attribuita a deodoranti e frigoriferi! I civili sono stati costretti a far fronte a tassi più elevati di cancro della pelle, mentre nessuna preoccupazione per gli effetti su flora e fauna, agricoltura o stabilità del clima ha raggiunto la coscienza civile!
Nel 1981, la NASA iniziò a provocare buchi nella ionosfera per studiare le instabilità del plasma artificiale e le modificazioni dei percorsi di propagazione delle trasmissioni radio. Una scarica del Sistema di Manovra Orbitale di sei secondi nell’agosto del 1985 ha causato un bagliore su un’area vasta 400.000 chilometri quadrati sopra il Connecticut.
Tra il 1978 e il 1990, lo strato di ozono nell’emisfero settentrionale è diminuito di un ulteriore 4 – 8% [al di là del 4% dai test degli armamenti], e lo strato di ozono dell’emisfero meridionale è diminuito del 5-10%. Si pensa che una diminuzione del 20% eliminerebbe la rete alimentare e renderebbe la vita impossibile, eppure non ci fu uno stop! Infatti gli Stati Uniti iniziarono a lanciare missili a propulsione nucleare nel 1990, mentre si preparavano alle guerre nello spazio. Nel 1995 gli Stati Uniti iniziarono a utilizzare il gigantesco riscaldatore ionosferico HAARP, che avrebbe potuto modificare più facilmente la densità della ionosfera. Hanno creato una serie di stazioni di monitoraggio passivo, chiamate stazioni Dual Radar, per rilevare tutti i cambiamenti a livello di terra, corrispondenti all’attività di manipolazione ionosferica. Il sistema HAARP a Gakona in Alaska è gestito congiuntamente dall’esercito e dalla marina statunitensi.
Questi esperimenti militari proseguono nel 21° secolo, in particolare con la ricerca della Marina allo scopo di costruire nuvole artificiali in alta quota, ben al di sopra il livello delle nuvole normali. Sono rimasta sbalordita dal fatto che tutta questa ricerca non abbia trovato spazio nel lungo Rapporto sulla Biodiversità! Tutto questo è un segreto per la sicurezza militare? Non possiamo imparare dai gravi problemi già sperimentati dal pianeta Terra a causa dei razzi nucleari e spaziali?
La mia conclusione e la mia raccomandazione alle parti impegnate per la Biodiversità è di sospendere questo documento fino a quando non avranno avuto tempo sufficiente e accesso ai documenti per dare un’occhiata agli errori e alle sorprese costituiti dagli esperimenti nello spazio, per i quali stiamo già pagando un prezzo elevato.
Questi esperimenti del passato sarebbero da considerare esperimenti “piccoli” o “locali”, se confrontati a ciò che viene ora pianificato, sia nei termini dello spazio geografico che in quelli del tempo che richiederebbero! È questa l’eredità che vogliamo lasciare alle prossime generazioni! Il supporto perpetuo alla vita di un pianeta deteriorato e seriamente malato non è un buon futuro! Consiglierei vivamente di dare una tregua al nostro pianeta Terra e di nutrirlo nuovamente, prima di altri esperimenti mal concepiti che non badano alla biodiversità.
Siamo tutti seduti sul ramo che gli scienziati ora vogliono segare!

Nove lauree ad honorem e numerosi riconoscimenti, tra cui il Nobel alternativo (Right Livelihood Award) che viene assegnato ogni anno a Stoccolma qualche giorno prima del Nobel, morta nel 2012 , Rosalie Bertell, si è battuta per far ottenere cure mediche alle vittime di Bhopal e a quelle di Chernobyl, promuovendo in entrambi i casi una Commissione medica internazionale.
Durante il bombardamento NATO in Jugoslavia parlò chiaramente e pubblicamente delle possibili conseguenze dell’impiego di armi all’uranio impoverito sulla popolazione. Per tutta la vita è stata dalla parte della giustizia, contro interessi molto potenti.

I was grateful for the direct approach of the Executive Summary, as prepared by the editors and separate from the writers of the document itself. The document had in places the appearance of an apologetic for geo-engineering rather than a serious even-handed evaluation of the proposal.
It feels as if the public is expected to trust the scientists to handle all of the problems of very complex and unpredictable interventions in the earth system, regardless of the dangers, just because scientists think society wishes to continue polluting. There are fewer unknowns and/or dangerous consequences connected with converting our addiction to fossil fuels into developing more benign energy technologies, than there is in manipulation of a delicately balanced earth system with the potentially widespread and irreversible consequences of interruption of the natural interaction between the oceans and the sun, the ionosphere and the magnetosphere!
We already have a wealth of experience, beginning with attempts at weather control with cloud seeding in 1950, and 50 decades of military experiments designed to assure “full spectrum dominance” by 2020. The failed attempt of the US military to build a “telecommunication shield” in the ionosphere in 1961, to counteract solar wind interference with radio communication, should serve as a caution. They brought 350 Trillion copper needles, 2-4 cm long, into the ionosphere, attempting to build a belt 10 km (6 miles) thick and 40 km. (25 miles) wide to form a belt. They actually tossed the 350 Trillion needles into orbit – and according to the wife of the physicist Walter Richmond: “we had the 8.5 Alaskan earthquake and Chile lost a good deal of its coast. That band of copper wires interfered with the planetary magnetic field.” [See Keesings Historisch Archief (K.H.A.) 1961; and Nick Begich and Jeane Manning, Angels Don’t Play this HAARP, Earthpulse Press, Anchorage, AK 1995, p.53.] In 1962, the US lifted the ban on atmospheric nuclear testing in July and began testing nuclear bombs in the ionosphere. These experiments included “a one kiloton device, at a height of 50 km and a one megaton and one multi-megaton, at several hundred kilometers height.” These test seriously disturbed the lower Van Allen belt, practically destroying it, with radioactive particles transported to the lower atmosphere, and with virtually no earth radio communication for several hour over many miles.
“On 19 July . NASA announced that as a consequence of the high altitude nuclear test of July 9, a new radiation belt had been formed, stretching from a height of about 400 km to 1600 km (250 – 1000 mi.); it can be seen as a temporary extension of the lower Van Allen belt.” [K.H.A. 5 August 1962]
Later in 1962, The Soviet Union undertook similar experiments, creating three new radiation belts between 7000 and 13,000 km (4300 and 8100 miles) above the earth.
Since this time the electron fluxes in the Van Allen belts have changed markedly and not returned to their former state. Scientists guess at about a hundred years before they return to ‘normal’ (if they ever do). In the 1970s we learned that the ozone layer had been depleted by about 4% by the 300 megaton nuclear explosions set off between 1945 and 1963. In none of these cases were the results of these colossal experiments predicted – nor have we been able to restore normalcy to our planet after the fact!

In 1983, the Saturn V rocket launch malfunctioned, and the second booster burned unusually high in the atmosphere, at 300 km (186 miles). This disturbance of the ionosphere reduced the total electron content by more than 60% over an area 1000 km in radius that lasted several hours, stopping all radio communication. After this experience, the military began to deliberately experiment with burning holes in the ionosphere, using the booster rocket, and later, the orbit maneuvering system. These experiments
caused artificial ‘air glows’ as radioactive particles struck the gases in earth’s lower atmosphere. During the 1980s there were about 500 to 600 rocket launches per year, culminating in 1500 in 1989. Each flight injected about 187 tons of ozone destroying chlorine and 7 tons of nitrogen into the ozone layer – both known to deplete it. Yet the burden of this destruction
was blamed on under arm deodorant and refrigerators! Civilians were forced to cope with higher skin cancer rates, while no concern for flora and fauna effects, farming or stability of climate reached the civilian consciousness!
In 1981, NASA began inducing ionospheric holes to investigate the artificial plasma instabilities and the modification of radio propagation paths. A six second Orbit Maneuvering System discharge in August 1985, caused an air glow covering 400,000 square kilometers over Connecticut.
Between 1978 and 1990, the ozone layer in the Northern Hemisphere decreased by a further 4 – 8 % [beyond the weapon testing 4%], and the Southern Hemisphere’s ozone layer decreased by 5-10%. It is thought that a 20% decrease would wipe out the food web and make life impossible, yet there was no stopping! In fact the U.S. began launching nuclear powered rockets in 1990, as it prepared for wars in space. In 1995 the U.S. first began to operate the giant HAARP ionic heater which could more easily change the ionosphere density. They set up a series of passive monitoring stations called Dual Radar stations to note all changes at earth level corresponding to ionospheric manipulative activity. HAARP is jointly operated by the U.S.
army and navy, in Gacona, Alaska.
These military experiments continue even into the 21st century, especially with the Naval research into building high altitude artificial clouds well above the level of normal clouds. I was astonished that all this research found no space in the lengthy Biodiversity report! Is all this secret for military security? Can we not learn from the serious problems already
experienced by planet earth from the nuclear and space races?
My conclusion and recommendation to the Biodiversity Parties is that the shelve this document until they have had sufficient time and access to documents to take a hard look at the blunders and surprises of the experiments with space for which we are already paying a high price. These past experiments would be consider ‘small’ or ‘local’ experiments compared
to what is now being planned both in terms of geographical space and the time extension that they would require! Is this the legacy we want to leave to the next generations! Perpetual life support for a deteriorated and seriously ailing planet is not a good future! I would strongly recommend giving our planet earth a break and nourishing it back to health before any
more ill-thought-out experiments with our life support system, never mind biodiversity. We are all perched on the limb the scientists now want to saw off!
